End of streaks for Fanni and Rennes

End of streaks for Fanni and Rennes

Fanni, 44 games later...

Injured to his adductors a few minutes before half time against Arles Avignon (0-1), Rod Fanni was forced to come out replaced by Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik, therefore playing his first ever competitive game with Rennes.

Nothing particular there, apart for the fact had not missed a minute over the last 44 games. End of a streak then, with this premature injury exit. Last time Fanni had missed in the Rennes defence, Caen was visiting the Route de Lorient on May 13th, 2009.

On that night, four days after the lost Coupe de France final against Guingamp (1-2), Guy Lacombe had decided for some turn-over and the “Rouge et Noir” had won the game 1-0 thanks to a header by Hansson following a cross by Sylvain Marveaux.

Rennes beats their daemons

By beating Arles-Avignon (0-1), the Stade Rennais managed to end a very abnormal streak against newly promoted teams. Indeed, Rennes had not won a game away on a newly promoted team’s field since… April 23rd, 2005!

That year, the Bretons had won in Istres with goals by Toifilou Maoulida and Alexander Frei, at the receiving end of a dream pass by Cedric Barbosa. That day, Victor Hugo Montaño was playing for Istres. Yesterday, he scored the Rennes goal to break the curse, with a beautiful shot in Vincent Planté’s inner side netting.

Over the last twelves away games against promoted team, the « Rouge et Noir » remained on five draws and seven losses, for only 8 goals scored and nineteen conceded!
