Marseille - Rennes: Statistics

Marseille - Rennes: Statistics

1 : This Wednesday at the Vélodrome, Abdoul Camara was offered his first ever start in Ligue 1. He had already started a game this season, but it was in Guingamp in the Coupe de la Ligue. Coincidentally, the young striker had already played his first ever Ligue 1 game in Marseille, on May 31st, 2009. Guy Lacombe, for his last match in charge, had brought him in during the second half to replace Elderson Echiejile.

5 : Five, as the streak of consecutive games in which Rennes had conceded a goal or more. After the draw in Lens (0-0), the defence had given in against Montpellier (0-1), Lyon (1-1), Auxerre (1-2), Brest (2-1) and Lorient (0-2), for a total of seven goals in five games. During the first nine game weeks, Mangane and his team-mates had only conceded four goals.

7 : Abdoul Camara’s start is breaking a series of seven consecutive entrances during the game. As Frédéric Antonetti’s favourite « joker », the youngster has been rewarded for his patience. It doesn’t take much searching to find the previous example of such a streak. Jirès Kembo had known the same experience in the latter stage of last season (from 28th to 34th game weeks, before starting against Sochaux).

However, to find a longer run, it takes a return to the 2005-2006 season. Fallen-out with Laszlo Bölöni, Cédric Barbosa had been introduced into nine consecutive games between January and February 2006.

8 : Jirès Kembo’s penalty having been stopped by Steve Mandanda, it’s a streak of 8 converted spot-kicks in a row for the Stade Rennais in Ligue 1, that stopped against Marseille. This season, Marveaux had scored his penalty-kick against Toulouse.

15 : Injured and therefore out for this game, Kévin Théophile-Catherine was the last player in the squad to have featured in every Stade Rennes game this season, all competitions included.

Three players remain, who have played in every Ligue 1 game so far: Stéphane Dalmat, Romain Danzé and Nicolas Douchez. The latter two have also played all games in full, in contrary to Dalmat, who was substituted after 67 minutes in Lorient.

24 : After the game, it was noticed that Frédéric Antonetti lined-up a very young team at the Vélodrome. However, because of some veterans ((Dalmat 31 years old, Douchez, 30, Fanni, 28), the average age of the team at kick-off was 24 years. A rather usual figure at the Stade Rennais this season, since most of the changes did not really affect the team’s age, expect Kana-Biyik for Mangane (6 years younger) and Camara for Marveaux (4 years younger). As a comparison, the “B” team lined-up in Guingamp on September 22nd had an average age of 22.7 years, and 21.5 without Leroy and his 35 years.

73 : At the 73rd minute of the game, Rod Fanni clumsily walked on the ball as he was in a last defender position. Brandão recovered the ball in the Rennes defender’s feet, and managed to launch Lucho Gonzales. In an ideal position to score, the Argentinian failed to hit the target. Probably the best occasion of the game for Marseille, and a blunder that would probably have been highly commented if Marseille – whose interest for Fanni was largely covered in the media in the early week – had managed to score on this action.
