Montpellier - Rennes : Previous meetings

The Montpellier Hérault Sport Club was founded in its current form in 1974, on the bases of SO Montpellier. The latter club, a former D1 outfit, experienced heavy financial difficulties in the 1970s and was only saved by merging with SC Montpellier.

The first Division 1 opposition between the two clubs dates back to the season 1932-1933, the first in the professional era. SO Montpellier was then playing at the Parc des Sports de l’avenue du Pont Juvénal, a pitch they would occupy until 1971. On April 30th, 1933, during the last game week in this first ever Division 1 season, Stade Rennes came to lose in Montpellier (0-1).

Over the last ten oppositions in L1, Rennes’ summary is quite average. The last victory for the “Rouge et Noir” in Hérault dates back to November 10th, 1999. On that day, Shabani Nonda scored the first goal after fifteen minutes. The Rennes player to be Philippe Delaye equalised a quarter of an hour before the end of the game, but Stéphane Grégoire put Rennes back in the lead immediately. Since then, because of Montpellier’s instability in Ligue 1, only four league games have been played at the Stade de la Mosson, for 2 draws and two Rennes defeats.

Last year, Montpellier won at the end of an eventful game (1-3). Making the most of Rennes’ defensive woes, Tino Costa put Rennes’ defence to the swords on the set-pieces, delivering a brace of assists to Joris Marveaux. And even though Jimmy Briand reduced the gap with twenty minutes to go, Souleymane Camara extended the lead again twelve minutes later. The game ended in complete confusion: Mangane was dismissed for a foul on Montaño who was running clear towards the goal, while Gyan received a red card… after the final whistle, following a brawl with Costal.
