Rennes - Marseille: Previous meetings

Rennes - Marseille: Previous meetings

Olympique de Marseille was founded in 1899, but the football team, according to certain sources, was only active from 1902 in an all-round sports club. A three-time Coupe de France winner in the 1920s, it was already a flagship club of French football when professionalism was put into place in 1932. Since then, just as the Stade Rennais, OM is one of the rare clubs never to have played at a level below the second division.

The first Division 1 encounter between the teans doesn’t date back to the first professional season (1932-1933) but to the following. During the first season, D1 was divided in two distinct groups and the teams wouldn’t play each other. On February 11th, 1934, Marseille finally visited the Breton capital for a league game. They would leave on a 1-0 defeat, on a goal by future French international Georges Rose.
After that, Marseille’s victories would remain quite rare. The Provencal would wait until their eleventh trip to Brittany before they clinched their first victory, on August 26th, 1951 (1-2). Rennes’ superiority was dented in the 1980s and at the beginning of the 1990s though, as the Breton club struggled in D1 while Marseille lived his greatest years.

Over the last ten Ligue 1 game, the balance remains in favour of Stade Rennes, who won six times for two draws and two defeats. The last defeat dates back to January 14th, 2007, for a Rennes team then slumped in the crisis, and whose defence had caved in twice after the dismissal of Stéphane Mbia in the first half.
The Stade de la Route de Lorient has often offered spectacular games between the teams, as witness Alexander Frei’s unforgettable four goals in March 2004, or the fabulous end of the game with three goals scored in injury time in August 2008.

Last year, the teams settled for a draw for the second consecutive time (1-1). In a pleasant game, Stade Rennes had scored first just befopre half-time, when Jérôme Leroy caused and converted a penalty. Marseille equalised seven minutes after the return from half-time, through Mamadou Niang. For his first ever start in Ligue 1, Yann M’Vila hadcaught the eye of the Rennes public with a first quality performance.
