Former players : Monterrubio will end his career

Former Rennais Olivier Monterrubio announced this Thursday to daily newspaper 20 minutes that he would bring his career to an end at the term of this season.

At FC Lorient since June 2009, « Rubio » has only played one Ligue 1 game this season, coming off the bench for only nineteen minutes on the pitch. A free-wheeling end of career for the 34 years old, at the end of fifteen professional seasons.
« I was at my best in Rennes », affirms Monterrubio, a “Rouge et Noir” from June 2001 to January 2007, and whose association with Alexander Frei remains in all memories. The League’s best assists provider in 2004, 2005 and 2006, Monterrubio knew a sorry end to his Rennes career however. “I think I stayed six months too long”, he admitted, as his relationship with Pierre Dréossi, then the first team coach, was far from idyllic.

Trained at the FC Nantes, the right winger had managed to get full acceptance from the Rennes fans however, even becoming one of the favourites of an attendance to which he offered 41 goals – and probably at least as many assists – in a bit more than 200 games.
After a very good season and a half in Lens, unfortunately ending with a relegation to Ligue 2, Monterrubio played in Sion for one season, winning one Swiss Cup. Returning in France in 2009, he reunited in Lorient with Christian Gourcuff, the man who recruited him at the Stade Rennais in 2001.

«I enjoyed myself, I’m happy, he admitted. I’ve won titles, played nearly 400 games in L1. I’ve won cups, leagues…”. The only thing he missed was probably a national cap with France.
Soon to retire, Monterrubio has already planned to settle in Nantes at the end of his contract with Lorient. “I leave serene and satisfied, I have got plenty of projects”, he declares.
