Europa League: Metallurg Rustavi or Irtysh Pavlodar for Rennes !

The draw for the third qualification round of the Europa League, in which Stade Rennes will enter the competition, has been completed this afternoon in Nyon (Switzerland).

And it would be an understatement to say that the Bretons will face a rather exotic start in the competition, with a double-legged tie against the winner of the second qualifying round between Metallurg Rustavi, third in the last Georgian league, and the Irtysh Pavlodar, third in the last Kazakh league.

During the first leg of this game, yesterday evening in Georgia, the teams settled for a draw (1-1). Irtysh Pavlodar seem to have a slight advantage in order to become Rennes’ first opponent in the competition, but anything remains possible for the return game in Kazakhstan.

For Rennes, a long trip is looming, either to Caucasus or to the plains of central Asia. A tricky match against a perfectly unknown opponent, which can only bring back the memories of Rennes’ epic qualification against Tavriya Simferopol in August 2008 (Intertoto Cup: 1-0 in Rennes; 0-1 in Simferopol; 10-9 on penalty shootouts).
