Former Players: Mensah in a deadlock

Former Players: Mensah in a deadlock

Tomorrow, Thursday, Olympique Lyonnais will be the next Ligue 1 side to return to training. Among the player returning, John Mensah should be present, still tied to Lyon for a year after two seasons on loan at Sunderland.

Mensah, whose OL experience turned to be a nightmare (never starting at a centre back position, the Ghanaian was also the victim of a rough arrest by the police in September 2008 and of racial abuse during a game in January 2009) and he is still not wanted in his club, who are hoping to transfer him and hope to obtain a decent fee in the process.
Transferred from Rennes to Lyon for 8.4 million euros (as disclosed by OL at the time), the buyback of the Ghanaian defender’s final year of contract is thought to be worth 5 million euros at this time, according to the Lyon management. A fee that seems too high for the possibly interested clubs, especially with Mensah suffering with recurrent injuries.

As a result, according to L’Équipe, Mensah is left with “no other proposition” than those from Sunderland, who are not ready to pay the fee requested by Lyon. The Ghanaian international will have to find a way out of the deadlock in the next two months, or he might face a blank season until the term of his contract.
