Former Rennais : Frei eliminates Manchester

At 32, Alexander Frei has just written one of the most beautiful pages of his rich career. Wednesday, the Swiss forward scored his fifth goal of the season in the Champions League. This goal qualified his club, the FC Basel, for the next phase, eliminating Manchester United.

The English club, finalist of the prestigious competition last year, collapsed on the ground of Parc Saint-Jacques of Bâle, after the draw (3-3) obtained during the first game between the teams at Old Trafford.
In order to be qualified, Basel needed a victory. In the first half, a goal of Marco Streller put the club in a good position. Then, Frei scored the second goal, in his typical striker style. On a cross from the left, the former Rennais forward sprung and placed a diving headed in De Gea’s goal. This break goal wasn’t useless for the Swiss club, since Manchester reduced the gap a few minutes later.

With this victory, Basel finish in second position of thir group and qualify for the next phase of the Champions League. This is the first time Frei plays in this competition, since he has never played it before, neither with Dortmund, nor with Basel.
