International: mixed fortunes for Qasmi and Sané

International: mixed fortunes for Qasmi and Sané

This Saturday evening, both Senegal and Morocco were playing their first game in the U21 African Nations Championship, which will continue until the first week of December and determine which three teams will represent Africa in the 2012 Olympics.

Playing on their home soil, Morocco didn’t fail in their first game, beating Nigeria in Tanger (1-0). Starting at centre forward, young Rennais Yacine Qasmi showed decisive by earning the penalty scored by former Parisian Barrada in the first half (26’). Qasmi was then subbed off, with fifteen minutes left to play.

Meanwhile, Senegal knew a less convincing entry in the competition, by losing to Algeria (0-1). Also included in the starting eleven, Abdoulaye Sané, the best goal-scorer of Rennes’ reserve since the beginning of the season, could find his way to the net. Just before half-time, however, he hit the post after eliminating two Algerian defenders.
The team from Maghreb would eventually win the match with a goal scored at the 76th minute by Mehdi Benaldjia. Anecdotally, the goal-scorer was dismissed a few seconds after his goal, receiving a second yellow card for taking his shirt off in elation.

Before the second game day, this Wednesday, Senegal will have no choice but win their second game if they want to keep their hopes of qualification alive. Morocco, meanwhile, is in a favourable position and could guarantee its place in the semi-finals by beating Algeria in this second game.”
