Montpellier - Rennes : previous meetings

Montpelier Hérault Sport Club, founded in its current form in 1974, has suceeded to SO Montpelier. The club, a founding member of the D1, experienced grave financieal troubles in the 1970s, and owed its safety only to a fusion with SC Montpelier.
The first confrontation between the club in Division 1 goes back up to the 1932-1933 season, the first one of the professional era. SO Montpelier then played their games in the Parc des Sports de l’avenue du Pont Juvénal, enclosure which would remain their home turf until 1971. On April 30th, 1933, for the closing game week of this first championship, the Stade rennais was defeated in Montpelier (0-1).

On the last ten confrontations in L1, the results of Rennes were globally average. Before their victory last March, the «Rouge et Noirk» had experienced twelve years and five consecutive games without a win in the Hérault, with two draws and three defeats.
Last season, Stade Rennes eventually broke this run by winning by the smallest of the margins, and - it is necessary to recognize it - with a maximum of luck. It is Razak Boukari, with a distant volley, who opened the score in first half, while Montpelier got most of the goal chances. In the last minutes of the game, Camara even smashed a shot on Douchez’s cross bar at point-blank range, missing a deserved equaliser for the Héraultais.
This victory, synonym of temporary first place for Stade rennais, was eventually announcing the beginning of a long, very long end of the season: after this success at the beginning of March, the «Rouge et Noir» would continue with a run of nine unsucessful games . Antonetti, furious against his players after the game despite the victory, had visibly felt the wind turning this evening.
