Rennes - Celtic: a Polish referee

Rennes - Celtic: a Polish referee

To referee the Thursday match between Stade Rennes and Celtic Glasgow, the UEFA chose to appoint a Polish referee. Robert Malek, 40 years old, is an experienced referee, who leads international matches since 2001.

Policeman in civilian life, he refereed an international match between Estonia and Ukraine a week ago. Since the beginning of the season, he has already refereed one Scottish team during a Europa League preliminary round game between Heart of Midlothian and Hungarian team of Paksi (4-1 victory for the Scottish).
In the past, M. Malek has already refereed French teams and he has even directed one match in Brittany, since he was the referee of the match between France and Faeroe Islands in Guingamp in October 2009 (5-0). The same season, he also refereed a UEFA Cup game between Saint-Étienne and Rosenborg (3-0 victory for the French team).

Reputed to be quite lenient, M. Malek gives three yellow cards per match in average, and sends off a player every five matches.
