Rennes manhandled but delighted

Just as against Arles-Avignon 2 weeks ago, the Stade Rennais were unable to dictate the play. Facing Sochaux’ very good passing abilities, Frédéric Antonetti had to adapt his tactics. And the players’ good fortune did the rest.

Rennes manhandled but delighted

When the attacking creativity lacks, success can also come from dead balls and defenders. The Rennais will remember it after their third success of the season (the first at home), thanks to two goals by Théophile-Catherine and Mangane on two corner kicks. Despite a convincing start of the match, Mangane’s men were gradually put on the back foot by Sochaux’ midfield technical ability.

When Saint-Étienne came to Rennes only not to concede, the FC Sochaux showed much more attacking intentions, in accordance to their creative potential. Soon trailing, Faty’s teammates had no other choice but go for it. Rennes was stepping back, giving away too many free-kicks, and Rennes logically cracked under the pressure.

Successful coaching

By playing their game, the « Lionceaux » managed to disorganise Rennes, held distant from the Sochaux goal. The system with only one anchor midfielder, however gifted he can be (M’Vila) has shown its limits until Mandjeck came in, bringing his impact in the one-to-ones. The combined entrances of the Cameroonese and Brahimi on the pitch brought aggressiveness and pace to Rennes’ game.

The best way not to offer chances is to recover the ball earlier. Frédéric Antonetti understood it and reinforced his midfield zone. The link between midfield and Victor-Hugo Montaño, guilty of many wrong decisions (when he had any) wasn’t looking better. But the Rennes’ coach decision, at the 57th minute, served their purpose and gave a new balance to a struggling squad.

Against Arles-Avignon, an average Rennes got all the points thanks to a cannon shot by Victor-Hugo Montanõ. Against Sochaux, the defenders came to help a struggling attack and earn another victory. The Stade Rennais has the good fortune of the big teams. Alas, it is not enough to become one.
