Paris SG - Stade Rennais : The History

The Opposition

Founded in 1970, the Paris Saint-Germain has been crown Champion of France in two occasions, ion 1986 and 1994, despite a recent history at the highest level. The capital’s club also won the Coupe de France eight times (the latest in 2010 against Monaco, 1-0 after extra-time) and the Coupe de la Ligue three times (1995, 1998 and 2008).

Always present in the first division since 1974, Paris Saint-Germain is the club with the biggest longevity in the top flight at the moment, with 37 seasons (The records remains Nantes’, with 44 seasons in the row in the first league).

In Europe, the PSG won one Cup’s winners cup against Austrian Rapid Vienna, with a goal by Bruno N’Gotty in the final in Brussels (1996). Paris was also the runner-up in the same competition a year later, losing to Spain’s FC Barcelona at Feyenoord Stadion, Rotterdam (1-0)

Some of the finest players in French and European football played for the Parisian club. Mustapha Dahleb, Carlos Bianchi, Dominique Rocheteau, Safet Susic, Georges Weah, Youri Djorkaeff, Ronaldinho or Pedro Miguel Pauleta – among others, gave the club its most glorious moments.

Previous Meetings

For many years, The Parc des Princes remained an impregnable fortress for the Stade Rennais FC. In 24 matches, the Stade Rennais lost 15 times, for only 6 draws.

However, the « Rouge et Noir » stay on a good streak of performances on the Parisian club’s pitch, since their victory during the 2007-2008 season (1-3). Leroy had opened the score with a beautiful lob against Landreau. Ceara equalised after one hour but Rennes made the difference in the latter stages of the game through Jimmy Briand and Sylvain Wiltord.

This was only the club’s second victory ever at the Parc des Princes, after a first success in 2000-2001 (1-0, with a goal by Cyril Chapuis). Two seasons ago, SRFC won for a second time in a row in Paris, thanks to an own goal by Sakho in the second half.

Finally, last year, the teams left on a draw (1-1), after Jérôme Leroy (always performant against his former club) opened the score, before new international Guillaume Hoarau equalised one hour in the game.

2009/2010 Season : Douchez - Fanni, Mangane, Hansson, Bocanegra - Lemoine, Mvila, Leroy - Bangoura (Kembo Ekoko, 69’), Marveaux (Doumbia, 90’+2), Briand (Sow, 84’).
