Rennes, proud leader of Ligue 1 !

Ligue 1, Stade rennais 3 - 1 Toulouse. The Stade Rennais is on top of the championship, forty years after it last happened. Danzé, Mangane and Marveaux offered a large victory to the “Rouge et Noir”, clinical upfront despite a rather lacklustre performance.

Rennes, proud leader of Ligue 1 !

Struggling to enter the game, clearly inhibited by the occasion and Canal + cameras, the Rennes players soon left the initiative to Toulouse, themselves unable to convert their domination to a lead on the scoreboard.

With the advantage of the ball possession, Alain Casanova created a few chances for themselves, without really worrying Nicolas Douchez. Just before half-time, after having been close to inexistent in the attack until then, the “Rouge et Noir” made the best of one of their rare counter-attacks to break the deadlock. After a nice side ball from Marveaux, Danzé, on an offensive run, hit the ball with the outside of his foot and curled the ball into the side-netting, leaving Valverde without a chance (1-0, 45’).

Well paid with this half-time advantage - more than flattering, it has to be said, by the look of the first forty-five minutes -, Rennes showed a much better face in the second half. Well led by Marveaux, Frédéric Antonetti’s players missed several occasions to bury the game. Kembo, first, chipped the ball over Valverde only to see it cleared by Cetto (56’); Montaño then sent a powerful shot just wide of the Toulouse goal (58’).

As the game was edging towards a nerve-racking ending, the liberation came from a dead ball. On a free kick, Leroy delivered a long cross for Mangane, left without marking from the Toulouse defence to deflect the ball with his head. The ball ended his run in Valverde’s net (2-0, 77’).

The rest of the game would be anecdotic. Entered five minutes earlier to replace Montaño, Camara was brought down by Valverde as he was chasing a long through ball. The penalty was logically awarded by M. Buquet, and perfectly converted by Marveaux, rewarded for his very good performance in this game (3-0, 81’).

Now certain to have earned the victory and the table leader position, Rennes controlled the end of the game, unable however to avoid Toulouse’s score reduction, through Sissoko, left alone by a rather passive defence (3-1, 88’).

With this three goals to one victory against Toulouse FC, the Stade Rennais set themselves up as the leader in the Ligue 1 standings. For the first time since 1970…
