Bordeaux - Stade Rennais : The History

Bordeaux - Stade Rennais : The History

The Opposition

Although its founding date (1881) make the club one of the oldest in France, the football section at the Girondins de Bordeaux was only created in 1910.

They weren’t involved in the first division 1 championship either, as Bordeaux only turned to professionalism in 1937, and remained in Division 2 until World War II.

After the liberation, the Girondins appeared at the highest level and won their first champion title in 1950. A lukewarm few years would follow, with a few relegations to D2, but the club settled in the top flight from 1962.

The days of glory would come in the 1980’s. With players such as Giresse, Tigana or Trésor, Bordeaux won three Champion titles and two Coupe de France, but also made a name for themselves on the European scene, losing a Champions’ Cup semi-final by a whisker against Michel Platini’s Juventus.

Returned to normality over the recent years, despite two more France Champion titles in 1999 and 2009, and two Coupe de la Ligue in 2002 and 2007, the Girondins are one of the most regular teams in the League since nearly twenty years. Bordeaux holds the French both records of participations to the European Cups (29) and European matches played (180). Meanwhile, the “marine” also fell on the last step towards European glory in 1996, losing in the UEFA Cup final to Bayern Munich (0-2, 1-3).

Some big names in French and European football have played for the Girondins. Patrick Battiston, Alain Giresse, Zlatko and Zoran Vujovic, Joseph-Antoine Bell, Klaus Allofs, Didier Deschamps, Zinedine Zidane, or more recently Marouane Chamakh and Yoann Gourcuff gave Bordeaux its finest footballing hours.

Previous Meetings

The Stade Rennes travels to Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas have often resulted in defeat. Indeed, the “Rouge et Noir” have only won five times in Gironde, for a total of 41 games played in D1 since 1945. The latest success dates back to the 2006-2007 season, closing a long draught in Gironde. Indeed, before then, the Rennais had failed to win in Bordeaux since 1973, for only three draws. Then, an evening of December 2006 that was Frédéric de Saint-Sernin’s first game in charge as the club’s president, goals by Marveaux and Utaka offered the “Rouge et Noir” a historic victory (1-2).

The following year, after an interminable string of seven games in four weeks for the Breton, and with a ridiculous number of injured players, Rennes was thumped in Bordeaux, 3-0. Pierre Dréossi had shown their limits in all the sectors of play, and failed to even make illusion. The goals were scored by Bellion (double) and Obertan. A few weeks later, Pierre Dréossi was resigning.

In 2008-2009, Guy Lacombe’s team missed a great occasion, despite scoring first very quickly through Olivier Thomert. Well in control of the game, the “Rouge et Noir” were surprised on a very trivial ball – a misunderstanding between Mangane and Douchez was enough for Gourcuff to steal the ball and score with 30 minutes to play (1-1). Rennes came back to Brittany with a precious point, but also some real regrets.

Finally, last season, Frédéric Antonetti’s squad was defeated once again at Chaban-Delmas, on a goal by Brazilian forward Wendel (1-0).
2009/2010 Season : Douchez - Fanni, Mangane, Aubey, Bocanegra - Lemoine, Leroy (cap) (Sow, 70’), M’Vila – Bangoura (Danzé, 70’), Gyan, Marveaux (Kembo Ekoko, 58’).
