Why so many injuries at the Stade Rennais?

After Brahimi last week, Tettey also got injured on Wednesday. Since the beginning of the season, Stade Rennes hasn’t been spared by injuries and prepare for the derby without several important players again. Explanations.

Why so many injuries at the Stade Rennais?

The question has become a ritual within the pre-match press conferences: « Frédéric, what is the situation with injuries?” This Wednesday, in training, it was Alexander Tettey’s turn to report for medical treatment, with a left thigh injury. His unavailability was to be confirmed this Friday after an MRI scan. In the meantime, the club was losing one of its most enterprising midfields for at least a week.

An attacking line in difficulties

Since the beginning of the season, Rennes had been piling up the absences, especially in the attacking line. This is one of the explanations for the attack’s poor performances (tenth in Ligue 1 with 32 goals). Nearly no one has been spared: from Victor Hugo Montaño to Jirès Kembo including Sylvain Marveaux, Yacine Brahimi, Razak Boukari or Abdoul Camara. At Francis-Le-Blé this Saturday, Stade Rennes will play in crucial game to remain in the race for the Champions League. And in this derby against Brest, the “Rouge et Noir” will be missing Sylvain Marveaux, Jirès Kembo, Yacine Brahimi, Alexander Tettey and maybe Abdoul Camara.

Last week, Nicolas Douchez had already noted that « if these teams had been removed (Ed.: OL and OM) as many attacking players as we have lost, it would have been very difficult for them”.

Is training too intense?

Beside the long absences of de Fabien Lemoine, Onyekachi Apam and Sylvain Marveaux, most of the injuries are muscle damage. Bodies seem to give in one after the other. This avalanche “truly disturbs” Frédéric Antonetti, who already said, on December 10th: « the situation isn’t bearable. » The Rennes manager has set the bar high in terms of intensity this season. And he favoured explosiveness to endurance for his players in order to set-up his tactics. “The main explanation, and I will only keep that one, is the demand I put in my training sessions before the games, he explained. We upped the level of expectation with a lot of energy, sprints and running above average. Maybe the lads are not used to it.” Another point underlined by the coach: “We have young players who are discovering that sort of level, Tettey included.

The situation could evolve. « So what do we do?, the manager now asks. Do we have to go back to the rhythm we had last year? We have decisions to make. We have to find the right balance between that rhythm and less injuries.
