Rennes is still struggling to score

Friendly, Stade rennais 1 - 1 Angers. For their second pre-season friendly, Stade Rennais conceded a second draw, despite dominating the SCO Angers. Showing clumsy in front of the goals, Rennes should have won that game against the Ligue 2 side.

Rennes is still struggling to score

Just as against Vannes, Frédéric Antonetti lined-up two “mixed” elevens in each half of the game, each of them were half-composed with possible starting eleven players. A reassuring fact, both in first and second half, is that the Rennes teams fielded showed dominant over their Angers opponents.

In the first half, John Verhoek scored his first goal with Rennes, and at the same time the first « Rouge et Noir » goal of this season, converting a perfect cross by young right back Dimitri Foulquier. Despite this goal, the Dutch striker didn’t have a great game in the first half, in which he was fielded as a right winger position very unusual for him.
Under the rain, Verhoek had already shown himself a few seconds earlier, when he missed an unmissed chance in front of the goal after Boukari’s excellent work, relayed by Fabien Lemoine.

On the other side, Angers were mainly replying via set-pieces taken by Romanian Claudiu Keserü. The Angers forward gave a few worries to Costil, who remained fully vigilant however.

In the second half, Antonetti comletely changed his team once again, with eleven changes at once. Immediately, Julien Féret showed his presence at a playmaker position he immediately eased to. Managing several passes behind the Angers defence, the man from the Cotes d’Armor managed to connect successively with Pitroipa and Camara, who both failed to finish the work.
Anf finally, at the highest of Rennes’ domination, Angers managed to equalised. Making the best of a bad clearance by the Rennes defence, Keserü was beating Abdoulaye Diallo with a shot udner the bar from the entrance of the penalty area.

Still dominating during the second half, Rennes didn’t manage to make the difference on the scoreboard. On a free-kick taken by Féret, Kana-Biyik managed to place a header but not to beat Malicki.
With just over ten minutes left to play, Camara launched Montaño in the depth, but the Colombian lost his duel against the Angers goalkeepers. Finally, after Féret slammed a volley outside of Malicki’s goal, Montaño headed the ball just wide following a corner.

Multiple chances, but not enough for Rennes to win their first game of the pre-season. They will have another chance next Wednesday in Sochaux, at the Stade de la Route de Lorient.

Coming soon, a full analysis of the game.
