Marseille - Stade Rennais : The History

Publié le 28 October 2010 à 12h00 by Bastien

Stade Rennes take on Olympique Marseille this Saturday, 21:00 C.E.T at Stade Vélodrome, at part of the France Ligue 1 Championship’s 11th game week. A history of encounters between the teams.

The Opposition

Is there any need to introduce Olympique Marseille? Founded in 1899, although the All-sports club was created in 1892, the Phocean club soon became one of the most important in the country, winning its first national teams in the 1920-1930’s.

To this day, OM have gathered nine France Champion titles (the latest in 2010), ten Coupe de France, one Coupe de la Ligue (2010), and one Champions League title, in 1993.

There were harder times however, with a few years in the second division in the 1950’s and 60’s, in the 1980’s, and finally in the middle of the 90’s for well-famous legal reasons.

Previous Meetings

Rennes’ victories in Marseille are rare events. The « Rouge et Noir » have actually failed to win any of their last ten matches in Marseille, with only three goals scored (one over the last four visits).

To find a Rennes success, it comes all the way up to the 2000-2001 season. Under Paul Le Guen’s management, Rennes had won 1-0 with a goal by Philippe Delaye in the first half. Since then, the wait is on.

Two seasons ago, Marseille and Rennes drew at the Vélodrome, 0-0, in August 2007. The “Rouge et Noir” had then realised a solid game against the Provence team but failed to make the difference up front.

Since then, Stade Rennais FC lost twice, with two additional “lessons” in Provence. Last seasons, Marseille had even won their France Champion title against Rennes, at the end of a 3 goals to 1 victory, and despite Jimmy Briand’s equaliser.

Saison 2009/2010 : Douchez - Fanni, Hansson, Mangane, Bocanegra - M’Vila, Lemoine, Leroy - Briand (Kembo Ekoko, 80’), Gyan (Bangoura, 80’), Marveaux (Sow, 80’)

Summary of Marseille - Stade Rennais in L1 : 43 games, 27 Marseille wins , 11 draws et 5 Rennes wins. 99 goals to Marseille, 41 to Rennes.

Last Rennes Goal scorer : Jimmy Briand (May 5th, 2010)
