"Utaka Case”: Portsmouth avoids liquidation

Good news for Portsmouth creditors -including the Stade Rennais -, after the British High Court rejected the HMRC’s claim for the club to be liquidated. On top of their relegation last season, Portsmouth has been going through terrible financial trouble since several years, and the club’s survival was very much in doubt until yesterday’s audience.

This decision will now force Portsmouth to pay back all their debts. In June 2007, Rennes and Pompey agreed on John Utaka’s transfer in England for a transfer fee of about 12 million euro. Part of this sum is still to be received at the moment, as Rennes accepted Portsmouth’ split payment offer without knowing of the club’s financial situation
