Former Players: Vairelles remanded in custody

A Stade Rennes player during the 2003-2004 season, former France international Tony Vairelles and three other people have been remanded in custody by the Nancy police, the AFP announced yesterday evening. The four men are charged with attempted murder.

The facts date back to the night of Saturday to Sunday. According to the Police, Vairelles and his three friends have been thrown out of a night club in Nancy, because of their advanced drunkenness. Upset, they reportedly came back with base-ball bats before being pushed away by the bouncers using teargas. One of the suspects then returned armed with a 22 long rifle weapon, injuring three security agents, one in the thigh, the second in the hand and the third, more critically, near the spine.
Arrested on Sunday, the four men have seen been remanded in custody. They were expected to appear in front of a court this Tuesday, while an enquiry continues to determine their respective roles in the incident.

Aged 38, Tony Vairelles is without a club since the liquidation of FC Gueugnon last April. Having become the owner of the club from Bourgogne in 2009, the player couldn’t save the club from a difficult financial situation, even explaining later that he had “been ripped off” by some of the Gueugnon managers still in place, and having lost 500,000 euros in the operation.
A few weeks ago, he was in talks to join the FC Bleid, a club from the Belgian third division.
