Former Players: Emerson becomes Brazilian Champion

Emerson, the ephemeral Brazilian Stade Rennais striker, has been crowned a Brazilian champion for the first time in his career, this Sunday, after his team Fluminense beat Guarani (1-0). The former Rennais even scored the championship goal, at the 62nd minute.

Since he left Brittany, Emerson went back and forth between the Persian Gulf and his country of birth, successively playing for Al-Sadd, Flamengo, Al Ain and now Fluminense over the last three years. In June this year, his recruitment by Fluminense had been seen as treason by the fans of his former club, Flamengo. The two Rio clubs are opposed by a strong historical rivalry.

With this title, Fluminense ends a drought of more than 25 years. The carioca team, one of the most popular in the country, had not been crowned since 1984.
