International, U21: the “Bleuets” win again

International, U21: the “Bleuets” win again

All smiles for the French U21 national team! By winning against Slovakia in Angers (2-0), the “Bleuets” have made a (big) step towards qualification, winning their fifth success in as many games.
With a 6-point lead over their opponents of the day (who have got a game in hand however), the young Frenchmen are now clear leaders in their group.

With Chris Mavinga starting at left-back, but once again without Vincent Pajot, who seems to have lost his starting XI slot to the benefit of Francis Coquelin (the Rennes midfielder only came off the bench for the last twenty minutes of the game), the Bleuets have logically beaten the Slovakians, even-though it took two set-pieces for them to concretise their domination. Headers by Mangala (33’) and Varane 64’) on corner-kicks made all the difference. The young Frenchmen were even allowed to miss a penalty, shot wide by Saint Etienne’s Guilavogui.

Successful, Érick Mombaerts’ team will now have to wait for a several months before returning to competitive football, since the next qualification games will not be played before June, against Latvia and Kazakhstan. Since Slovakia will face Romania, the Bleuets could possibly be qualified before the final game, scheduled in September against the same Slovakian team.
Until then, they will be playing friendlies, starting with a prestigious encounter against Italy, at the end of February 2012.
